Welcome to the Department of Historical Theology
University of Vienna
↳ Faculty of Catholic Theology
↳ Department of Historical Theology
The historical dimension of theology is already grounded in God’s self-revelation in time.
Against this backdrop, historical theology is dedicated to reflecting on the faith and its practice throughout the centuries. By examining the theological tradition and exploring the forms of Christian faith and ministry in earlier times, historical theology contributes significantly to the identity and continuity of the Church today.
The disciplines united at the Department of Historical Theology are bound together by a shared responsibility for the theological, ecclesiastical, spiritual, and liturgical heritage—not out of a mere museum-like interest, but insofar as it shapes, enriches, and challenges the life of the Church today.
